It was afternoon when their eyes opened to the world, the rain a constant hum that had not once subsided.
“Mmmm,” Irene sleepily murmured, feeling Helena’s lips on the palm of her hand.
“Good morning, gorgeous.”
“Mmmm,” Irene repeated, cozying inside Helena’s arms wrapped around her.
They took a few moments to lay quietly, the rain accompanying their wake-up sighs.
Their bladders called for attention, and each one got up to the darkened house and let nature call forth release.
“It’s almost one o’clock.” Helena sighed, the lack of light in the northwest not giving any indication as to the time of day. “I have to leave in a few hours for the airport.”
“Don’t remind me. Hungry?”
“Famished. More yogurt in bed?”
“Of course.”
“I do like encores of lovely performances.”
They both got up and went to the kitchen. Helena made the coffee and Irene got out the new yogurts they had bought yesterday along with some more granola, dried fruits, bananas, and a few strawberries. She arranged them all on a platter, like a flower, the petals of many colors, art on a plate.
“Beautiful,” Helena commented, pushing Irene’s wild, sleep- and love-filled hair away from her eyes, kissing her forehead.
They went back to the bedroom, cranked up the heat, and, naked, fed each other on the bed, laughing with abandon, forgetting completely about any imminent departures. When their bellies were satiated, Helena lathered yogurt all over Irene, listening to her giggles of ticklishness, as Helena’s tongue lapped up every bit, every corner of Irene’s skin.
“I smell like a milk factory.” Irene laughed.
When Helena had, like a cat, fastidiously cleaned up all of Irene, their laughs subsided as their lips took over, ravenous all over again, their tongues thrusting inside the other’s mouth, a desperation that filled them as their bodies tightened together, their juices flowing, gushing around their thighs. Back and forth they pushed each other against the softness of the bed, the pillows, their wants insatiable, their moans filling every space, and still they couldn’t get enough of the other. Time meant nothing to them as they wailed and screamed, their bodies starting over each time with a newness, a desire to never let go.
There was one last scream, echoing in the room, a last gasp, and then only the rain sounded, the soft reminder of a world, a life outside.
Helena looked at the clock.
It was five minutes to three.
“We have to leave in ten minutes,” Irene pronounced, her voice sad, small.
They got in the shower together, quickly removing residual yogurt, and in five minutes, bodies were dried, clothes were on, and they were out the door, Irene expertly maneuvering the car through Sunday afternoon lollygaggers.
She pulled into the departures curb at Sea-Tac at 3:45 p.m.
“You better rush. Your plane leaves in just over an hour. Text me, please, when you are home.”
Irene looked at Helena, their tears welling up in their eyes. She could barely see through them.
They embraced, emotion filling their touch, and one quick kiss later, Helena rushed off through the afternoon crowd as Irene drove away, the airport police not giving her a moment to sit with it all.
